Ayana was inspired to write this story after a trip to Ghana to explore her roots as an African-American woman, and she was mesmerized by the people, architecture, and culture there; combined with her love of fantasy novels and with a goal of adding more Black characters and stories to the genre, her debut BEASTS OF PREY was born. BEASTS OF PREY is a Pan-African inspired fantasy that follows two teenagers who strike a dangerous deal to enter a magical jungle to hunt the mysterious creature that has been menacing their city for 100 years. Everyone knows that any good YA story starts with making a deal, and BEASTS OF PREY does not disappoint. It’s full of monsters, mythos, and #BlackGirlMagic, and once you open it and join the hunt, you won’t be able to put it down.
